Strong aftershocks continue to rock northwest Iran
Another strong earthquake has struck Varzaghan in northwestern Iran, which had already been devastated by a deadly earthquake last Saturday.
The Mehr News Agency reports that an earthquake with a magnitude of 5.3 on the Richter scale struck at 6:32 PM local time on Tuesday.
Fars reports that the Varzaghan earthquake was felt in Tabriz, the capital of East Azerbaijan Province, where people once again ran into the streets in alarm.
Since the cities of Ahar, Varzaghan, and Hereese were decimated by 6.2 and 6.0 earthquakes on Saturday, about 200 strong aftershocks have continued to rock the region.
The Mehr News Agency reports that as officials are evaluating the extent of the damage, some reports have indicated that the earthquakes have affected the lives of 155,000 people, and 12,000 residential buildings have suffered damaged ranging from 20 to 100 percent.
The financial cost of the damage has so far been estimated at 8 billion toumans.
