IAEA delegation arrives in Iran
The delegation from the International Atomic Energy Agency headed by IAEA Deputy Director General Herman Nackaerts arrived in Tehran on Wednesday January 16.
ISNA reports that the delegation was received by Ali Asghar Soltanieh, Iran’s representative to the IAEA.
Nackaerts had expressed hope before his trip that Iran would allow the agency to visit the Parchin Military Base, which has become a point of dispute between the agency and Iran. The IAEA says it has intelligence showing that nuclear tests might have been carried out at this location, but Iran claims the Parchin Base is not connected to its nuclear program and, as a military site, opening it up to inspection would be a cause for security concerns.
The new round of talks between Iran and the IAEA will take place today at Iran’s Atomic Agency.
Iran is now subject to widespread sanctions by the EU and the U.S. over their nuclear disputes, which has severely affected Iran’s oil revenues.
